Goji berries, also known as the wolfberry, are brightly colored berries that are native to China. These red-orange berries have been used for their medical benefits for many years in Asia and they are being touted as one of the world’s most powerful superfoods. They have become very popular now in the U.S.
Unique among fruits because they contain all essential amino acids, these berries also have the highest concentration of protein of any fruit. Additionally, they are loaded with vitamin C, contain more carotenoids than any other food, have twenty-one trace minerals, and are high in fiber.
Goji berries are rich in disease-fighting polysaccharides. Studies suggest polysaccharides strengthen the body’s ability to fight diseases. The polysaccharides in goji berries have a chemical structure similar to substances found in echinacea and maitake mushrooms. As a result, they contain natural anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal compounds. Their powerful antioxidant properties and polysaccharides help to boost the immune system. In traditional Chinese medicine they are renowned for increasing strength and longevity.
There are many goji berry health drinks/products available today, however some of these drinks/products have been highly processed which strips out some of the nutrition. If you want the maximum health benefits of goji berries, it is best to eat them in their most natural, unprocessed form.
