Federal Judge upholds almond pasteurization law (again)

A federal judge in January, has again upheld U.S. Agriculture Department rules requiring treatment of raw almonds. This was in response to two isolated outbreaks of salmonella, in conjunction with conventional almond farms, one in Canada in 2001, and a second in Oregon in 2004. While contamination in almonds is not common, the industry determined that aggressive measures were necessary to prevent any other occurrences. Organic farming is known to be environmentally sustainable, but can it be economically sustainable, as well?

We at Living Nutz would like to thank the almost 30,000 people who have signed the “Mandatory Pasteurization of Almonds is Wrong Petition”.  Since this petition was created in 2007 a lot has happened (thanks to the Cornucopia Institute) in the progress of winning an appeal against the USDA’s ruling that has made all almonds grown in the USA illegal by implementing extreme forms of pasteurization including methods that revert to high heat, carcinogenic chemical fumigation and steam pasteurization.
